The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 4

1

And Adam knew1 853 Eve his wife; and she conceived,4 and bare4 853 Cain, and said,4 I have gotten1 a man from the LORD.

2

And she again55 bare2 his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper6 of sheep, but Cain was a tiller6 of the ground.

3

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought55 of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4

And Abel, he also brought52 of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect4 unto Abel and to his offering:

5

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.1 And Cain was very wroth,4 and his countenance fell.4

6

And the LORD said4 unto Cain, Why art thou wroth?1 and why is thy countenance fallen?1

7

If thou doest well,55 shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well,55 sin lieth6 at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule4 over him.

8

And Cain talked4 with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up4 against Abel his brother, and slew him.4

9

And the LORD said4 unto Cain, Where [is] Abel thy brother? And he said,4 I know1 not: [Am] I my brother's keeper?6

10

And he said,4 What hast thou done?1 the voice of thy brother's blood crieth6 unto me from the ground.

11

And now [art] thou cursed7 from the earth, which hath opened1 her mouth to receive2 thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12

When thou tillest4 the ground, it shall not henceforth55 yield2 unto thee her strength; a fugitive5 and a vagabond6 shalt thou be in the earth.

13

And Cain said4 unto the LORD, My punishment [is] greater than I can bear.2

14

Behold, thou hast driven me out14 this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid;11 and I shall be a fugitive5 and a vagabond6 in the earth; and it shall come to pass,1 [that] every one that findeth6 me shall slay me.4

15

And the LORD said4 unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth6 Cain, vengeance93 shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set4 a mark upon Cain, lest any finding6 him should kill53 him.

16

And Cain went out4 from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt4 in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17

And Cain knew4 his wife; and she conceived,4 and bare4 Enoch: and he builded6 a city, and called4 the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18

And unto Enoch was born11 Irad: and Irad begat1 Mehujael: and Mehujael begat1 Methusael: and Methusael begat1 Lamech.

19

And Lamech took4 unto him two wives: the name of the one [was] Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20

And Adah bare4 Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell6 in tents, and [of such as have] cattle.

21

And his brother's name [was] Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle6 the harp and organ.

22

And Zillah, she also bare1 Tubalcain, an instructer7 of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain [was] Naamah.

23

And Lamech said4 unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear3 my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken54 unto my speech: for I have slain1 a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24

If Cain shall be avenged93 sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25

And Adam knew4 his wife again; and she bare4 a son, and called4 his name Seth: For God, [said she], hath appointed1 me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.1

26

And to Seth, to him also there was born27 a son; and he called4 his name Enos: then began men90 to call2 upon the name of the LORD.
