Chapter 3

And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,²

Arise,³ go³ unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach³ unto it the preaching that I bid⁶ thee.

So Jonah arose,⁴ and went⁴ unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

And Jonah began⁵⁵ to enter² into the city a day's journey, and he cried,⁴ and said,⁴ Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.¹²

So the people of Nineveh believed⁵⁵ God, and proclaimed⁴ a fast, and put on⁴ sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

For word came⁴ unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose⁴ from his throne, and he laid⁵⁵ his robe from him, and covered¹⁷ [him] with sackcloth, and sat⁴ in ashes.

And he caused [it] to be proclaimed⁵⁵ and published⁴ through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying,² Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste⁴ any thing: let them not feed,⁴ nor drink⁴ water:

But let man and beast be covered¹⁰¹ with sackcloth, and cry⁴ mightily unto God: yea, let them turn⁴ every one from his evil way, and from the violence that [is] in their hands.

Who can tell⁶ [if] God will turn⁴ and repent,⁸ and turn away¹ from his fierce anger, that we perish⁴ not?

And God saw⁴ their works, that they turned¹ from their evil way; and God repented¹¹ of the evil, that he had said¹⁴ that he would do² unto them; and he did¹ [it] not.
